Holland is another country where bikers appear welcome, particularly when the Dutch MotoGP is on at Assen, but the roads are generally crowded and the police are very high profile particularly on the motorways. We have been warned by Dutch bikers that the penalties for speeding are far more severe than in Britain so it is best to keep a wary eye out. Amsterdam seems to be the place that everyone heads for, (for reasons that shouldn't need much explanation), and it is indeed an eye opener. A word of warning however, even the Dutch admit that crime is rife in Amsterdam, particularly mugging and pickpockets and you are well advised to go in groups of not less than three if venturing into the Red Light District after dark. From experience, it is much easier to park well outside Amsterdam and use the local bus service to go into the centre rather than ride/drive in. Buses are regular and compared to Britain, very cheap. All bus drivers we came across spoke good English and directions were never a problem. We have stayed at the HetAmsterdamse Bos Camp Site, (see link) which is located just outside of Amsterdam and not far from Schipol Airport. It is very handy for Amsterdam, (the bus stops just outside the site), and is well used by bikers heading for Assen, (see link) for the MotoGP or the World Superbikes. The on-site facilities are excellent with good shower blocks, a shop and a very lively bar. Close to the camp site is the world famous Aalsmeer Flower Auctions (see link), which are well worth a visit. The actual flower auction and despatch building covers almost 1million sq mts which makes it the largest single building in the world. To actually see the auction you need to get there early. Flowers are despatched to all over the world, often via Schipol Airport, and what you see at the auction in the morning will be anywhere in the world within 24hrs. There is a visitors centre and an on site shop.
